Got Scripture For That?

I know I’m going to date this video by saying this, but we’ve heard a lot over the last couple of years to “trust the science.” Well... you know, science is founded on the principle of testing and retesting and proving and disproving, isn’t it? Otherwise it wouldn’t be trustworthy. We wouldn’t be able to base anything on it. Scripture is the same.

Test ALL things

We’re told to test all things. (1 Thessalonians 5:21) Not some things, ALL things. And that includes what we believe. So how do we test – how do we prove what we believe? By what we think? By what we feel? By what we’ve experienced? No. By Scripture. Why? Why does the theological doctrine of Sola Scriptura (by scripture alone) hold any weight? Well, if God is unchanging – which He is (Malachi 3:6, Hebrews 13:8, James 1:17 and on and on), and if the Bible is God’s Word – which it is (2 Timothy 3:16 and on and on), and if it is true – which it is (John 17:17), and if His Word is eternal – which it is (Isaiah 40:8, Matthew 24:35, 1 Peter 1:25, and on and on), then why wouldn’t we base what we believe on it? After all, we’re told that Scripture is profitable – advantageous – beneficial for teaching, correcting, and convicting us (2 Timothy 3:16).

Testing all things includes Scripture

We have to test – or prove – Scripture. How? Well, God is Spirit (John 4:24) and therefore naturally His Word is spirit (John 6:63). What is born of the flesh is flesh and likewise whatever is born of the spirit is spirit (John 3:6). So we can’t compare Scripture to natural, worldly, physical, material things. In 1 Corinthians 2:13 Paul talks about comparing spiritual things with spiritual. We can’t just take a single Scripture and latch onto it as whatever truth we want it to be – we have to 1) understand it in context, and 2) compare it to other Scripture.

So. What do you believe? More importantly, why do you believe it? Got Scripture for that? Until next time – grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord.
